Darlington Hall, Natural Heating, Commercial

Nov
Darlington Hall wanted to move away from oil fired heating. A Viessmann 1Meg Watt chip biomass boiler was used to provide the heating and hot water to the hotel and several office spaces.

The project took 26 weeks from start to finish including the heat main installation and all internal connection works to link the new system to the existing system.

The Viessmann biomass boiler was delivered on an articulated lorry directly from Germany. Weighing 13 tonnes and in two sections for ease of installation it was lifted into place via crane before the roof was built.  The boiler delivery date dictated the scheduling on this project and all other aspects were fitted around this.

The fuel store is designed to hold around 180m3 of wood chips or two full articulated lorry loads.  The chips are delivered into the feed auger via a walking floor. The support beams are set into a polished concrete floor. Hydraulic rams slowly move the wings that push the wood chips into the auger feed system and into the boiler for burning.

Installing the new system has saved £80,000 a year in fuel costs, and reduced carbon by 400 tonnes
