How efficient are these heat pumps?
The efficiency of a heat pump is calculated as a Coefficient of Performance (CoP) unit. It calculates the efficiency of a heat pump by comparing the input and output amount. So if a heat pump makes use of one kW of electricity while giving and output of four kW of heat, the CoP here is four. The efficiency of the pump is measured in terms of a higher CoP value.

An air-source heat pump although not as efficient as a ground source heat pump, has the potential to reach a minimum level of 3 CoP even with the temperature dropping down to -3°C to 10°C. The CoP increases with a higher outdoor temperature. Especially for an environment like the UK, the air source heat pumps make an excellent choice where temperatures are relatively mild but easily achieve the mid-teens or higher over spring and summer.
