Net Zero and Heat Pumps for Heating Homes

01
Dec
A heat pump is a proven technology that offers substantial carbon savings compared to heating systems that burn fossil fuels for the purpose of heating. Being a well-established technology, there has been a lot of technological advancement which has further improved the efficiency of these systems.

During the recent Cop26 climate summit, as a part of its climate commitments the UK government has set in motion plans to offer grants to encourage the installation of air source heat pumps and other low-carbon heating solutions.

Net Zero will push towards moving away from burning fossil fuels for heating completely over the next few years. The government’s 'Heat and Buildings' strategy will push towards phasing out the installation of natural gas boilers. In the future we are likely to see a mix of low-carbon technologies for heating.

In driving this change, the government will be focusing on extending grants such as Home Upgrade Grants and the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund. These grants and funds will not only help in meeting the Net Zero target, but also play a pivotal role in tackling fuel poverty. It has also announced the new £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme which will support households that plan to shift to low-carbon heat pumps with grants of £5,000.

Heat pumps are already a major technology in many other countries, and are known to provide high levels of efficiency. With the government also planning to set a clear ambition for the industry to cut down costs of heat pump installations by at least 25-50% by 2025, it will be another important step towards ensuring that heat pumps are no more expensive to buy, install and run compared to gas boilers by 2030.
